What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are veins in the legs which have become swollen and enlarged. They are usually blue or dark purple, and can appear lumpy, bulging and twisted in appearance.
Varicose veins are very common and do not usually cause significant medical problems. They are caused when the one-way valves in the veins stop working properly, allowing blood to flow backwards through the veins rather than smoothly to the heart.
The blood can then pool in the vein, resulting in it widening and becoming varicose. Varicose veins can be hereditary and you will also have more chance of developing them if you are female, older, overweight or have a job that involves long periods of standing.
